Pennsylvania has reported over 1,000 measles cases this year, marking the largest outbreak in the state in more than three decades. Health officials confirmed 1,004 cases, including 198 hospitalizations and five deaths, with the current outbreak originating west of Philadelphia in April.
Nationwide, the U.S. is enduring its most severe year for measles since 1991, with nearly 3,900 cases reported. This surge has also resulted in eight measles-associated deaths in the past two years, a figure exceeding the previous three decades combined.
In response, New York's governor declared a disaster emergency due to rising cases in rural areas and neighboring states. This executive order broadens the scope of individuals authorized to administer measles vaccines, extending to paramedics and midwives, and permits nurses to order testing alongside doctors. New York has reported over 100 cases this year.
