- Expanding midwife scope of practice is a key priority for the new organization.
Prince Edward Island has officially merged its nursing and midwifery regulatory bodies into the new P.E.I. College of Nursing and Midwifery. This consolidation brings licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives, and registered psychiatric nurses under a single umbrella organization.
The merger aims to streamline resources and better address current healthcare system challenges. Melissa Panton, the college's CEO, highlighted that expanding the scope of practice for midwives is a significant priority.
While P.E.I. was the last province to formally introduce midwifery services in 2024, the college plans to explore broader roles for midwives in women's health, working collaboratively with the provincial government. The province already boasts a broad scope for nurse practitioners and RN prescribing.
