- Program provides real-time guidance to bystanders before paramedics arrive.
- Pilot aims to improve survival rates for cardiac arrest and other emergencies.
Peel Regional Paramedic Services (PRPS) has initiated a new medical drone pilot program designed to enhance emergency response times in Bolton, Ontario. This program deploys drones to deliver crucial medical supplies such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), naloxone, trauma supplies, and epinephrine auto-injectors directly to emergency locations.
The drones are operated by certified Peel paramedics and can travel at speeds up to 60 km/h, flying at an altitude of 150 to 200 feet. Beyond delivering equipment, the service will provide real-time guidance to individuals awaiting paramedic arrival, thereby strengthening the chain of survival.
This innovative pilot builds upon PRPS's broader Community Safety Program, focusing on improving survival rates in time-sensitive emergencies. Developed in collaboration with Dr. Sheldon Cheskes of the Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine, the program aims to expedite defibrillation, particularly in areas where response times can be longer, offering residents the best possible chance to save a life.
