Patient Survives Massive Blood Loss After Cancer Surgery
24 Oct
Summary
- Patient lost 7-8 liters of blood, received 25-27 units in transfusions.
- Emergency surgery controlled bleeding from a duodenal ulcer post-cancer treatment.
- Critically ill patient recovered after a complex 20-25-day hospital stay.
A patient undergoing treatment for mouth cancer experienced life-threatening bleeding, ultimately recovering after a complex 20-25-day hospital stay in Mumbai. The individual lost an estimated 7-8 liters of blood and received approximately 25-27 units through transfusions.
Initially, the patient underwent successful mouth cancer surgery involving free flap reconstruction. However, recovery was complicated by recurrent bleeding from a duodenal ulcer, necessitating further intervention. Endoscopic treatments and subsequent emergency surgery were required to control the hemorrhage.
The critical situation involved dangerously low blood pressure and haemoglobin levels. A complex emergency operation lasting four hours was performed to locate and secure the bleeding ulcer. Following this procedure, the patient gradually stabilized and was discharged in stable condition.
The patient is now receiving radiation treatment for mouth cancer, with the reconstructive surgery remaining successful without complications.
