A 50-year-old man, Gopiram Bhiwaji Khadse, tragically passed away on Thursday at Fortis Hospital in Vashi. His death allegedly occurred days after he was administered an expired IV fluid on August 31 at the NMMC Hospital. Khadse had been admitted with symptoms of dizziness and vomiting and was diagnosed with dengue, falciparum malaria, and jaundice.
Following the administration of what is suspected to be expired IV fluid, Khadse's health significantly declined. He was transferred to Fortis Hospital for further treatment and remained on ventilator support in the ICU for three days before his passing. In response to the incident, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Kailas Shinde suspended three hospital staff members, including two staff nurses and a pharmacist, for alleged dereliction of duty.
An investigation into the cause of death is underway, with the postmortem report reserved pending further analysis. Viscera samples have been sent for chemical analysis, and the histopathology report will be examined. Meanwhile, the NMMC Mayor announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Khadse's next of kin, as his sons had protested alleging hospital negligence.
