Parents Kimberley Newark and Yann Trupiano are launching a civil claim against the NHS trust responsible for the Princess Royal Hospital, where their newborn daughter Olivia Trupiano passed away at five days old.
Olivia was born prematurely on September 14, 2024, via emergency caesarean section. Her mother had been experiencing severe pain, later identified as a rare two-stage spontaneous rupture of her splenic artery, leading to Olivia developing severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.
Despite an inquest concluding that no aspects of Olivia's care by the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust were likely to have caused her death, the parents are determined to find answers regarding the events leading to their daughter's passing.
A spokesperson for the trust expressed condolences and willingness to meet with the family, acknowledging the inquest did not provide all desired answers. An independent review into maternity services at the trust is also underway.
