Lambing season warning after child's severe illness
25 Mar
Summary
- Parasitic infection outbreak linked to farm animals sickened over 80.
- A four-year-old boy required hospitalization for four days.
- Health officials urge against handling lambs during farm visits.

Health authorities are cautioning the public against handling lambs during spring farm visits following a significant outbreak of parasitic infection last year. The cryptosporidiosis outbreak, linked to a petting farm in April 2025, affected more than 80 individuals. A four-year-old boy, Michael, was among those who fell ill, experiencing severe diarrhea and a fever that necessitated a four-day hospital stay.
Public Health Wales reported over 525 confirmed cases of cryptosporidium, with 35% involving children under ten. Following the 2025 incident, the affected farm voluntarily suspended its petting sessions. Health officials emphasize that young farm animals can carry germs and recommend strict hygiene practices.
Precautions for visitors include refraining from picking up lambs, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact, and supervising children closely. Farms are also advised on hygiene measures and safe visitor interaction. While farms are encouraged as educational opportunities, prioritizing safety is paramount for both visitors and animals.
