Summary
- Papaya leaf extract pills aid platelet recovery in cancer patients.
- This treatment costs significantly less than standard drugs.
- Study shows reduced chemotherapy delays and dose reductions.
Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy may soon benefit from a natural aid: standardized papaya leaf extract pills. For years, patients at Tata Memorial Hospital consumed raw papaya leaf extract without medical approval. A recent study, whose phase-3 results were published in JCO Global Oncology, has now provided robust evidence for its efficacy.
The research focused on chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, a condition where platelet counts drop significantly, often necessitating treatment delays. Standard treatments like romiplostim are effective but expensive, with weekly costs reaching Rs 15,000. They can also take up to three weeks to restore platelet levels.
In contrast, the study found that papaya leaf extract pills, taken at a dose of three tablets daily, offer rapid platelet recovery. This supportive treatment course costs only Rs 300 for 10 days. The study evaluated 219 patients with solid tumors, showing that those taking the extract pills experienced faster platelet recovery, fewer treatment interruptions, and were more likely to stay on schedule.
Dr. Vikas Ostwal, the principal investigator, noted that this remedy is also beneficial for dengue patients. The findings from Tata Memorial Hospital have generated evidence that could significantly impact cancer care globally, offering a more accessible and cost-effective supportive therapy.
