Dad's agony: Cancer diagnosed too late
28 Oct
Summary
- Late-stage pancreatic cancer spread to lungs and liver.
- Family claims initial symptoms were misdiagnosed as pancreatitis.
- Father screamed for legs to be amputated before dying.

Bharat Gharu, a 71-year-old father of five, experienced excruciating pain and bloating, initially diagnosed as acute pancreatitis. Five months later, he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer that had spread to his lungs, liver, and bones.
His daughter, Careena, expressed that if the initial symptoms had been properly followed up, surgery might have been an option. Instead, Bharat was offered chemotherapy or palliative care, choosing the latter for comfort at home.
In his final hours on March 16, 2025, Bharat collapsed at home in severe pain. Despite calls to the palliative care team, they reportedly declined to attend, suggesting hemorrhoids and advising to call 111. Paramedics eventually transported him to the hospital, where he was left waiting in a corridor before passing away.
Investigations by the London Ambulance Service and the palliative care team acknowledged shortcomings in care and communication. Both organizations have apologized and stated they are implementing changes to improve end-of-life care services.
