New Drug Offers Hope for Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer, notoriously aggressive and often detected late, may have a new weapon in its arsenal. Daraxonrasib, an oral medication, has demonstrated a meaningful impact on patient survival, according to data published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
This new drug targets a specific genetic mutation, the RAS gene, which is implicated in over 90 percent of pancreatic cancers. Daraxonrasib functions by blocking the signal that causes cancer cells to grow uncontrollably. A Phase 3 trial involving 500 patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic cancer showed that daraxonrasib significantly outperformed standard chemotherapy.
Results from the trial, which concluded by May 2026, revealed that daraxonrasib extended overall survival to a median of 13.2 months, compared to 6.7 months with chemotherapy. This represents a 60 percent reduction in the risk of death for patients with the RAS G12 mutation. Progression-free survival also nearly doubled.
Dr. Brian Wolpin described daraxonrasib as a potential new standard of care for second-line treatment. In May 2026, the FDA granted expanded access, allowing some patients to receive the drug before its formal approval. Ongoing trials are exploring its use earlier in treatment regimens and post-surgery.
