Cold Snap Fuels Flu & Asthma Surge in Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County's largest healthcare network has reported a significant increase in patients diagnosed with the flu, pneumonia, and asthma-like illnesses during a recent cold spell. Between January 25 and January 29, the network treated 178 flu patients, 61 with pneumonia, and 57 with severe asthma.

Experts suggest that cold weather facilitates the spread of viruses by encouraging people to gather in enclosed spaces. Additionally, changes in temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure can trigger respiratory issues in individuals with conditions like asthma. A new flu virus, which began circulating in December, is contributing to a busy flu season.

Physicians anticipate a further rise in respiratory illnesses following an approaching cold front expected on January 31, predicted to bring the coldest air of the season to South Florida. To protect themselves, residents are advised to stay warm, avoid large crowds and enclosed spaces, and minimize contact with sick individuals. Asthma patients should keep their inhalers readily accessible.
