Pakistan: Hepatitis C Crisis Reaches Alarming Levels
20 Apr
Summary
- Pakistan faces the world's highest Hepatitis C burden.
- Nearly 37,000 deaths annually result from liver cirrhosis and cancer.
- Over 13.8 million people in Pakistan live with Hepatitis B or C.
Pakistan is currently facing a critical health crisis with the highest global burden of Hepatitis C. The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed significant concern over the rising rates of liver-related ailments, including Hepatitis B and C, and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).
Estimates suggest that between 13.8 to 15 million people in Pakistan are living with viral hepatitis. The country carries the heaviest global load of Hepatitis C, with an estimated 9.8 to 10 million cases. Approximately 3.8 to 4 million people are affected by chronic Hepatitis B.
These infections are leading to a high mortality rate, with nearly 37,000 deaths occurring annually due to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). A major concern is that only 25-30% of those infected are aware of their condition, indicating a substantial gap in screening and diagnosis.
