Pakistan's Polio Fight: 98% Reach, But Refusals Linger
6 Jun
Summary
- Over 18.6 million children vaccinated in 79 high-risk districts.
- 163,000 frontline workers ensured high vaccination coverage despite challenges.
- Persistent transmission noted, with poliovirus detected in environmental samples.

Pakistan's latest sub-national polio campaign has shown encouraging signs, achieving 98% coverage by reaching over 18.6 million children across 79 high-risk districts. This success was driven by more than 163,000 frontline workers who conducted door-to-door vaccinations, a critical effort that also managed to vaccinate 88% of children missed in initial rounds. This persistence is vital in preventing the virus from exploiting immunity gaps.
Despite this progress, challenges remain as 22,320 parental refusals were recorded, and tens of thousands of children were initially missed. Environmental samples continue to detect poliovirus, indicating ongoing transmission. As one of only two countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic, Pakistan, alongside Afghanistan, faces the critical task of interrupting transmission. Future efforts must address vaccine hesitancy, missed children, population movement, and transmission hotspots, with intensified community engagement and regional coordination being paramount.
