3 Mar
Summary
- PMDC enforces a new code of ethics for medical practitioners.
- Minimum 2% and maximum 5% disability quota mandated.
- Patient safety, dignity, and consent are central to the code.

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has implemented a new code of ethics for all registered medical and dental practitioners and recognized institutions nationwide. This updated framework places patient safety, dignity, confidentiality, and informed consent at its core, reinforcing accountability in clinical practice and professional conduct.
A key revision introduces inclusive guidelines for individuals with disabilities, mandating a structured disability quota ranging from a minimum of 2% to a maximum of 5% across all recognized medical and dental institutions. Admission will now consider functional capacity assessments alongside academic criteria.
Eligibility for professional practice and licensure will be based on the ability to safely perform essential duties, supported by reasonable accommodations like assistive technologies and adapted environments. Multidisciplinary medical fitness boards will be established to conduct objective functional assessments and ensure transparent evaluation for licensure with necessary accommodations.
