Pakistan HIV Crisis: Experts Demand More Funding

Pakistan is experiencing a concerning rise in HIV cases, with particular gravity in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab. Experts have convened to address this escalating public health crisis, emphasizing the critical need for increased domestic funding to sustain HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care services. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on external donors and ensure the long-term effectiveness of national HIV response strategies.

The increasing trend of HIV transmission in Pakistan stands in contrast to many high-burden countries that have successfully reduced new infections. Concerns have been raised following outbreaks among children in areas like Ratodero and Mirpurkhas, exposing significant shortcomings in infection prevention and control practices within healthcare facilities. Experts noted that estimated new HIV infections have risen dramatically, with a substantial portion of individuals living with HIV remaining undiagnosed.

Discussions identified several key challenges, including limited testing and counselling services, inadequate surveillance systems, unsafe injection practices, and pervasive stigma against affected populations. Participants recommended expanding community-based and provider-initiated testing, promoting self-testing, and integrating antiretroviral treatment into primary healthcare. A multi-sectoral approach involving governments, civil society, and healthcare providers is deemed essential to curb the spread and support those affected.
