August 1st is PA Donor Day, an initiative dedicated to promoting organ donation and highlighting the profound impact it has on saving lives. This year, a unique campaign called "Ducking for Donor Day" is distributing thousands of small green ducks throughout western Pennsylvania. These ducks, appearing in various community spaces, serve as tangible reminders that a single organ donor can save up to eight lives.
The "Ducking for Donor Day" campaign, inspired by a popular trend of leaving small ducks as acts of kindness, imbues this tradition with a life-saving purpose. Each duck features a QR code intended to educate finders about organ, tissue, and cornea donation. The Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) hopes these ducks will spark conversations and encourage more people to register as donors.
This effort addresses the significant need for organ donors, with over 6,000 individuals in Pennsylvania and more than 500 in West Virginia currently awaiting life-saving transplants. CORE invites anyone who finds a duck to keep it, pass it on, or scan the QR code to learn more and share their experience on social media using #DonorDay.
