Ozempic Generics Arrive: Global Access Widens

Generic versions of the widely used weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy are poised to enter markets in countries representing 40 percent of the global population. This significant development follows Novo Nordisk's loss of patent protection in several highly populated nations, a change expected to dramatically reduce medication costs.

Initial generic availability is anticipated in India as early as this weekend, with broader rollouts expected in China, Canada, Brazil, Turkey, and South Africa within the next few months. This expansion is particularly impactful given the large numbers of adults with obesity, overweight, and diabetes in these regions.

These new generic options promise to democratize access to treatments that have transformed obesity management and shown benefits in preventing heart attacks and strokes. While the US and Europe will not see generics until the early 2030s due to extended regulatory protections, the global impact of this upcoming generic wave is substantial.
