Ozempic Cuts Fracture Risk in Diabetes Patients
19 Jun
Summary
- Ozempic use linked to 15% lower bone fracture risk.
- Study analyzed health records of over 161 million patients.
- Findings suggest Ozempic may protect bone health.
People with type 2 diabetes who use semaglutide, the medication found in Ozempic and Wegovy, have shown a notable reduction in bone fractures. A recent study, presented on Sunday, June 14, 2026, indicated a 15% lower risk of fractures among these patients.
Researchers analyzed the health records of more than 161 million individuals treated in U.S. hospitals between 2016 and 2023. The study compared over 26,000 patients on semaglutide with a control group of more than 33,000 patients using other diabetes medications. The semaglutide group experienced greater weight loss and fewer fractures overall.
Lead researcher Jairo Noreña of Stanford University Medical Center noted that bone fractures can severely impact quality of life, especially for older adults. While previous research suggested rapid weight loss from GLP-1 drugs might thin bones, this new study offers a different perspective, potentially preserving bone mass with moderate weight loss. These preliminary findings encourage further investigation into semaglutide's impact on bone health.
