New Hope for Breast Cancer Survivors: Supplement Fights Fatigue
25 Oct
Summary
- Nutritional supplement oxaloacetate shows promise for fatigue.
- Study found significant cognitive improvement after 8 weeks.
- Larger trials planned to confirm oxaloacetate's effectiveness.

A recent small-scale study suggests that the nutritional supplement oxaloacetate could alleviate persistent fatigue and cognitive difficulties, commonly known as 'brain fog,' experienced by individuals recovering from breast cancer treatment. These symptoms can significantly impact quality of life for years post-treatment.
The pilot trial involved 18 women who had undergone breast cancer treatment within the past five years. After eight weeks of daily oxaloacetate supplementation, participants reported substantial improvements in cognitive function, with test scores moving from impaired to normal ranges. Significant reductions in fatigue and insomnia were also observed.
Researchers hypothesize that oxaloacetate may help by regulating glutamate metabolism and enhancing mitochondrial energy production, thereby counteracting neuroinflammation induced by cancer treatments. While findings are encouraging, the study's small size and lack of a control group necessitate further investigation.
A larger, phase 2 placebo-controlled trial is now planned to definitively assess oxaloacetate's efficacy. Experts caution that individuals should consult their healthcare providers before trying any new supplements during or after cancer treatment due to potential interactions and unknown long-term effects.
