Green Corridor Saves Lives in Organ Transplant Feat
25 Jan
Summary
- Organs transported 246 km by road via interstate green corridor.
- Two patients received new lease on life through coordinated donation.
- Rare pancreas transplant performed within strict 12-hour window.

A critical interstate green corridor facilitated the life-saving transport of donated organs from AIIMS Rishikesh to PGIMER, Chandigarh, covering a distance of 246 km. This operation ensured that two patients received vital transplants, marking a significant achievement in organ donation and transplantation efforts.
The process involved the family of Raghu Paswan, who was declared brain dead on January 20, consenting to organ donation at AIIMS Rishikesh. His liver, pancreas, and one kidney were destined for PGIMER, while other organs went to facilities in New Delhi and Chennai.
Due to the unavailability of immediate flights, a unique 246 km road green corridor was established, the first of its kind from AIIMS Rishikesh to Chandigarh. Medical teams from PGIMER traveled overnight to AIIMS Rishikesh, with organ retrieval commencing on Friday morning. The organs were transported back to PGIMER, where transplant surgeries were initiated even before the organs arrived.
The complex pancreas and kidney transplant was successfully performed on a 28-year-old woman within 11 hours. Pancreas transplants are rare due to strict donor criteria and low acceptance rates, with only a 20% success rate nationwide. PGIMER has performed 14 pancreas transplants in 2024 alone, contributing significantly to the national total of 30.
