Summary
- 13 people die daily awaiting organ transplants, highlighting critical need.
- Over 1,800 lifesaving operations were performed on children last year.
- One donor can save eight lives and enhance 75 more.

National Donate Life Month begins this week, drawing attention to the critical shortage of organ donors, with 13 individuals dying each day while awaiting transplants. This month aims to raise awareness about the profound impact of donation, as each donor can save eight lives and positively affect 75 more.
While most organ transplant recipients are adults, children also benefit significantly. Last year alone, more than 1,800 children underwent lifesaving transplant surgeries. St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia celebrated this by raising the Gift of Life flag.
Nine-year-old Ariana Ugarte, who received a kidney and liver transplant five years ago, participated in the ceremony. Her mother, Maria Ugarte, shared the challenging journey, including Ariana's 26-hour double organ transplant at age 3. Despite the difficulties, Ariana is now healthy and thriving.
Ariana's story highlights the hope offered to over 100,000 people on the transplant waiting list, including more than 2,000 children. Jackie Giuffrida of Gift of Life noted that transplants once considered impossible are now routine, offering renewed life to many.
Ariana, now in third grade, expressed immense gratitude and aspires to become a nurse. She wishes to thank the donor family whose generosity gave her the gift of health and a chance to experience childhood joys and learning.
