A 59-year-old man from Hooghly, Tamal Chakraborty, has become a beacon of hope for three organ-failure patients following his family's decision to donate his organs during the Durga Puja festive season. Chakraborty suffered an intracranial hemorrhage on Thursday and was declared brain-dead by doctors at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata, by Saturday.
Despite their personal grief, Chakraborty's wife Soma and son Sagnik consented to the donation. His liver and kidneys were successfully transplanted into three recipients on Monday, with the cornea banked for later use. This compassionate act underscores the profound spirit of giving, even during personal tragedy, and brings the state's deceased donation count to 13 this year.
While Bengal continues to work on increasing organ donation rates, this event follows a record of 17 donations in 2025, which aided over 50 patients. Organ donation awareness efforts are ongoing, with hopes to surpass last year's record before the year concludes.
