A recent road accident led to the declaration of brain death for 48-year-old N. Ajay Kumar at Manipal Hospitals on Wednesday. His family's decision to consent to organ donation has subsequently given a new lease of life to four patients.
Kumar met with an accident on February 23 near Gunadala bus stop, sustaining a critical head injury. Despite initial treatment at a local facility, his condition worsened, leading to his transfer to Manipal Hospitals on February 24.
Following extensive medical evaluation and monitoring, Kumar was declared brain dead on Wednesday evening. In a compassionate gesture, his family agreed to organ donation, enabling the transplantation of his liver and one kidney at Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada.
Further, another kidney was successfully transplanted at Kamineni Hospitals in the city. The donor's corneas were also retrieved and sent to LV Prasad Eye Hospital, offering sight to others. The organ retrieval followed all mandated medical and legal protocols.
