Summary
- Ordos offers free genetic screening before conception and prenatal testing.
- Program expands to cover newborns and children up to age 6.
- City aims to shift healthcare focus from treatment to prevention.

The city of Ordos in Inner Mongolia has launched a pioneering government-funded screening program aimed at identifying potential health risks from before conception through a child's early years. This initiative, initiated in 2025, offers a free package of services valued at 4,286 yuan ($622.7).
The program encompasses pre-pregnancy genetic screening, prenatal testing, newborn disease screening, and health checks for children up to age 6. It focuses on preventing illness by expanding proactive measures across the entire early life cycle. Ordos's approach distinguishes itself through its extensive screening categories, significant government financing, and broad reach.
Services include free carrier screening for 151 recessive single-gene diseases before pregnancy and noninvasive prenatal testing for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome. Post-birth, newborns undergo screening for 247 diseases, with personalized medication-related gene testing. Congenital heart disease screening is also available for children under 6.
Since its inception, the program has supported around 55,000 pregnant women, newborns, and children. Early detection has facilitated timely treatment for conditions such as congenital hypothyroidism and phenylketonuria, effectively preventing developmental disorders. This comprehensive approach allows families to make informed decisions and provides reassurance.
The city's broader preventive healthcare strategy includes offering free HPV vaccination and cervical/breast cancer screenings. These efforts have notably increased vaccination rates and early diagnosis of cervical cancer, achieving "early detection and early intervention."
Ordos's extensive life cycle health services have contributed to a sustained increase in the birth rate, with health indicators surpassing national averages. The "Ordos Experience" highlights systematic planning, integrated resources, and a prevention-first philosophy within urban development.
