Summary

- West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes is at unprecedented levels.
- Officials urge residents to use repellent and eliminate standing water.

Orange County mosquito control officials are issuing a strong warning as the region grapples with unprecedented levels of West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes. As of August 1, 2026, mosquito traps in 16 cities across the county have tested positive for the virus, with the highest concentrations detected in the northwestern areas, including Fullerton, Anaheim, and Buena Park. This marks a significant increase compared to previous years, with vector control reporting 206 positive samples this year, surpassing last year's total of 186.
Despite the alarming rise in mosquito activity, there have been no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Orange County to date. However, officials emphasize that the threat remains high and is expected to persist throughout the season. Residents are urged to continue eliminating standing water around their homes and to use mosquito repellent, especially during dusk and dawn, the peak biting times for mosquitoes. Those experiencing significant mosquito issues can submit a service request to the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District for assistance.
