13 Jun
Summary
- At least 15 water-related deaths occurred during recent hot weather.
- Supervised swimming locations are being promoted for safety.
- Drowning Prevention Week runs until June 20, urging awareness.

Authorities are urging open water swimmers to prioritize supervised locations following a recent spate of hot weather which tragically resulted in at least 15 water-related fatalities. Drowning Prevention Week, a national initiative led by the Royal Life Saving Society UK, is underway until June 20, aiming to raise awareness about water safety. Councils in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire are actively supporting this campaign, highlighting the risks associated with open water swimming and promoting safer alternatives.
Designated safe swimming areas with lifeguard supervision are available in various locations. In East Yorkshire, beaches in Bridlington, Hornsea, and Withernsea offer safe zones. Lincolnshire features a supervised lake near Lincoln with extensive safety measures, and beaches in Skegness and Mablethorpe will have patrols until September 6. Jubilee Park in Woodhall Spa provides a heated outdoor pool with qualified lifeguards. These efforts aim to mitigate risks as people increasingly seek to cool off in lakes, rivers, and the sea during warmer months.
