Ontario Pharmacists Get New Powers: More Vaccines & Ailments
11 May
Summary
- Pharmacists can administer new vaccines starting July.
- Nine more common ailments can be treated by pharmacists.
- Other health professions will also see expanded scope.
Ontario is significantly expanding the scope of practice for its pharmacists to enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency.
As of July, pharmacists will be authorized to administer a wider range of vaccines, including those for tetanus, whooping cough, diphtheria, RSV, shingles, and pneumococcal disease. This measure is part of a broader government strategy to ease pressure on primary care and emergency departments.
Additionally, pharmacists' ability to assess and treat common ailments will grow. Following the existing allowance for 19 conditions, nine more will be added, encompassing issues like head lice, nasal congestion, ringworm, and warts. Plans are in motion to introduce five more treatable ailments in early 2027.
This initiative extends beyond pharmacy, with regulatory bodies for optometrists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, dental hygienists, denturists, and speech-language pathologists being directed to develop frameworks for scope expansions within their respective professions.
