No Prescription Needed: Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids Coming to Ontario

Later this year, Ontario will permit the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, eliminating the need for a prescription for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. This legislative change is slated to be part of the fall economic update. The move aims to enhance accessibility and patient choice, according to the Ontario Ministry of Health, by removing existing regulatory barriers and introducing new technologies.

However, the Ontario Association of Professional Audiology (OAPAC) voices concerns about potential misdiagnosis, emphasizing that hearing issues can range from simple wax buildup to serious conditions like tumors. They advocate for professional consultation to ensure appropriate medical treatment is not overlooked. The College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) supports the initiative for adults aged 18 and older, provided consumer safeguards are robust, but stresses that OTC devices are not suitable for children or those with underlying medical conditions requiring professional assessment.

Health Canada approved Apple's hearing aid and test features in 2025, allowing devices like AirPods Pro 2 and 3 to function as hearing aids. These features are currently inactive pending provincial legislation. This technology is already utilized in over 100 countries, offering a potential avenue for accessible hearing assistance. The ministry assures that these changes will complement, not replace, prescription hearing aids and professional care, and will not affect existing funding through the Assistive Devices Program.
