Ontario Hospitals Idle: Surgeries, MRIs Underused
16 Sep
Summary
- Provincial hospitals have significant unused capacity for MRI and surgeries.
- Windsor's MRI capacity utilization is two-thirds, operating rooms one-third.
- Coalition criticizes public funds for private clinics amid underused public facilities.
An Ontario Health Coalition report released on Tuesday reveals substantial underutilization of MRI and surgical capacity within provincial hospitals. Patrick Hannon, Windsor-Essex Co-Chair, stated that Windsor is only using two-thirds of its MRI capacity and a mere third of its operating room capacity.
The coalition is advocating for increased provincial government funding to hire additional staff, thereby addressing the shortfall and enabling better utilization of existing public hospital resources. This comes as the Ford government recently announced $155 million in public funds designated for private MRI, CT, and endoscopy clinics.
Many of these private clinics are situated near public hospitals that possess underused equipment and facilities. The coalition questions the benefit of investing in private services, especially those with additional fees, when public healthcare infrastructure is not being fully leveraged to ensure community health and economic stability.
