Gambling Helpline Calls Surge 300% Post-Privatization
4 Mar
Summary
- Young men's calls to Ontario's gambling helpline rose over 300%.
- The increase occurred after private online gambling was allowed.
- Researchers urge stronger harm reduction and treatment measures.
A new study reveals a dramatic increase in young men contacting Ontario's mental health helpline for gambling-related issues, with calls rising by more than 300%. This surge followed the province's decision to permit private online gambling.
The research, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, analyzed data from ConnexOntario between January 2012 and September 2025. It specifically noted a significant rise in gambling-related outreach from boys and men aged 15 to 24 after the privatization of online gambling in April 2022.
Researchers suggest that increased gambling marketing since privatization may be targeting this demographic. The study also observed a 239% increase in active player accounts per capita aged 15 and older between April 2022 and August 2025. Experts emphasize the need to treat gambling disorders as a public health issue, given their severe consequences on mental health, families, and communities.
