Doctors and faculty from the Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College in Ongole actively engaged the public on World Obesity Day through various educational initiatives. These events aimed to promote healthy eating habits and raise awareness about the dangers of obesity.
A public rally traversed Gandhi Road, focusing on the health consequences of excess weight. Complementing this, a street play vividly illustrated the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle. Interactive health education sessions were also conducted for the general populace.
Conveniently, free Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference screenings were offered to commuters at the railway station. A health awareness skit further emphasized practical measures for obesity prevention, underscoring the need for lifestyle modifications.
Health professionals highlighted that obesity is a significant risk factor for serious conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and coronary artery disease. They advised adopting a 30-minute brisk walk daily, managing stress, limiting junk and sugary foods, and maintaining a regular sleep schedule.
The department also promoted its Wellness Clinic, located in Room no. 222 of the Government General Hospital, which provides preventive and curative services for lifestyle-related diseases. Residents were encouraged to utilize these services for regular health checks, counseling, and management of obesity.
