New Omicron Variant RF.5 Detected in Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh Health Minister, Satya Kumar Yadav, announced the detection of the Omicron RF.5 variant within the state. This identification was confirmed through genome sequencing of four COVID-19 positive samples originating from the Kadapa district. The samples were sent for testing to a virology laboratory in Pune, which subsequently verified the presence of the RF.5 sub-lineage of Omicron.

Director of Medical Education Vishnuvardhan clarified that RF.5 is one of several Omicron sub-lineages identified globally and is being monitored as part of routine genomic surveillance. The World Health Organization is also tracking RF.5, which has been reported more frequently in Singapore and other parts of Southeast Asia. This regional pattern contributed to Indian health authorities' focus on its potential spread.

Officials stated that RF.5 evolved naturally from Omicron, tracing its lineage through specific branches without being a recombinant variant. Importantly, current scientific evidence suggests RF.5 does not exhibit increased severity compared to other circulating Omicron sub-variants. Symptoms reported are consistent with common Omicron experiences, including sore throat, cough, fever, headache, and body aches.

Minister Yadav assured the public that COVID-19 cases in Andhra Pradesh are sporadic and that hospital infrastructure, including special wards and testing kits, is ready. The state has reported a low number of total COVID-19 cases, indicating a contained situation.
