Maverick, a four-year-old boy, is experiencing the syndrome's effects, including loss of speech and safe play abilities. However, a clinical trial has helped stabilize his condition, enabling the return of some lost skills like shooting baskets and giving high fives. The family travels weekly to North Carolina for Maverick's care. To support research and aid other families facing this illness, they organize the annual Mighty Maverick 5K, which also serves as a celebration of Maverick's birthday. Last year's event raised $40,000 for the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation.
