Ohio Warns: Deadly Synthetic Drugs Flood State
1 Aug
Summary
- Dangerous synthetic opioids and veterinary sedatives are appearing in Ohio's drug supply.
- These substances significantly increase the risk of fatal overdoses.
- Officials urge 911 calls and naloxone administration for suspected overdoses.

The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center (ONIC) has issued urgent warnings regarding the presence of hazardous synthetic substances within the state's drug supply. These newly identified drugs, which include powerful synthetic opioid analogs and veterinary sedatives such as medetomidine and xylazine, pose a substantially elevated risk of fatal overdoses.
These synthetic compounds are designed to mimic the effects of controlled opioids but are particularly dangerous due to their extreme potency and unpredictable nature. Medetomidine and xylazine, specifically, are not approved for human consumption and can induce severe sedation, leading to life-threatening complications and making overdose response more challenging.
Officials stress that the evolving drug landscape now features unpredictable polydrug mixtures, meaning individuals may unknowingly consume substances far more dangerous than intended. The ONIC is committed to preparing first responders and public health officials for these emerging threats. In suspected overdose situations, immediate calls to 911 and administration of naloxone are recommended, regardless of the suspected drugs involved.
