Ohio health authorities have reported a substantial increase in cyclosporiasis cases, with 177 infections identified across 43 counties as of July 2, 2026. A significant portion of these cases, 171, were recorded in June, with a notable spike since June 20th. This situation reflects a broader outbreak affecting the United States. The parasite, cyclospora cayatenensis, spreads through contaminated food or water. Symptoms include severe watery diarrhea, nausea, weight loss, and appetite loss. While not life-threatening, it is treatable with antibiotics. Public health officials emphasize preventative measures such as meticulous washing of all fruits and vegetables and frequent handwashing. Other foodborne illnesses like E. coli, salmonella, listeria, shigella, and norovirus share similar symptoms and transmission routes, highlighting the importance of food safety practices.
