Odisha Shifts to People-Centred Cancer Care

Experts in Odisha are calling for a fundamental shift in cancer care, moving towards a people-centred approach that integrates social and environmental factors with traditional treatment. This new model emphasizes universal and continuous support, extending beyond hospital visits to include counselling, nutrition, rehabilitation, and assistance with financial and social challenges.

The state government is actively expanding its efforts to improve cancer care through enhanced awareness campaigns, upgraded diagnostic and treatment facilities, and specialized screening camps. Recognizing the critical role of socio-economic factors, initiatives like free treatment in state-run hospitals and support through Ayushman Bharat health cards are in place. Furthermore, 'Home Away Home' facilities are being established to provide accommodation and care for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Health activists have welcomed these developments, stressing the importance of patient navigation services, palliative care, and coordinated referral systems. The ultimate goal is to create an equitable cancer care system that comprehensively supports patients throughout their entire journey, from initial screening to long-term survivorship, ensuring care is responsive to individual patient realities.
