Odisha Tribals: Health Woes Despite Insurance
25 Oct
Summary
- Tribal communities face healthcare access challenges
- High rates of undiagnosed chronic diseases exist
- Undernutrition and anaemia affect many children and women
A recent study revealed that Odisha's tribal populations struggle with healthcare access and chronic disease management, despite widespread health insurance. Limited availability of diagnostic services and essential medicines in remote areas exacerbates these issues. Many tribal adults suffer from undiagnosed hypertension, and a significant number have multiple chronic conditions.
Alarmingly high rates of stunting, severe stunting, and underweight among children and pregnant women were reported. Anaemia is also a major concern, affecting a substantial percentage of women and young children. These health issues are compounded by cultural practices and inadequate supplementation programs.
Furthermore, behavioural barriers and a lack of awareness about insurance claims hinder healthcare utilization. While most tribal households have insurance, only a fraction understand how to utilize these benefits. Digital inequalities also present challenges, with lower internet usage among women.
The study recommends a shift towards intervention research, focusing on improving healthcare delivery, community-based programs, and genetic disorder research. Strengthening primary healthcare, medicine supply chains, and deploying community health navigators are also crucial steps.
