An alarming jaundice outbreak is currently underway in the Nua Dokanda area of Puri district in Odisha, with more than 10 individuals falling ill. The widespread illness is strongly suspected to be linked to contamination within the Daya River, prompting an urgent investigation by health authorities. Residents have been advised to refrain from using the potentially polluted water.
Medical Officer Bibek Anurag of Kanas Community Health Centre has confirmed that water samples and samples from suspected cases have been collected. While the exact cause is pending conclusive reports, there are currently three active patients receiving treatment. Jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes, occurs when the liver cannot process bilirubin efficiently.
Preventive measures for jaundice include staying hydrated with boiled or filtered water, practicing good hygiene to prevent transmission of viruses like Hepatitis A and E, and getting vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B. A liver-friendly diet rich in fiber and avoiding excessive alcohol and toxins are also crucial. The situation is ongoing as authorities work to identify the source and contain the spread.
