Northwell Health has been granted approval by the New York State Department of Health to launch the inaugural adult pancreas transplant program on Long Island. This significant development positions North Shore University Hospital as a key center for this specialized procedure, which was finalized after a site visit by health officials. The initiative is set to serve a broad patient population across the greater New York region and southern Connecticut.
This new program allows North Shore University Hospital to offer a comprehensive suite of transplants, including liver, kidney, heart, pancreas, and lung. Northwell Health has been involved in kidney transplants since 2007 and expanded to a pediatric kidney program in 2017. The establishment of the pancreas program, spearheaded by Dr. Niraj Desai, signifies a major enhancement to the health system's transplant capabilities.
Pancreas transplants are designed to assist individuals suffering from advanced Type 1 or, in select cases, Type 2 diabetes. Often performed in conjunction with a kidney transplant, this procedure can significantly improve blood sugar control, reduce reliance on insulin, and enhance overall quality of life for patients facing challenging health conditions.
