Veteran Meals: NYC Driver Joins Army

Ryan McCormack, who dedicated six years to delivering meals to veterans through God's Love We Deliver, is preparing to enlist in the U.S. Army this August. McCormack stated that his decision was influenced by the veterans he met on his route and their evident pride in their service. He found their advice and patriotism inspiring, motivating him to serve his country.

McCormack's regular clients include Army veteran Chokel Taylor, who relies on the weekly meal deliveries due to challenges with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Taylor shared that his mental health conditions can make everyday tasks, like grocery shopping, feel overwhelming, highlighting the significant impact of reliable support systems.

The Connected program, operated by God's Love We Deliver from its Industry City headquarters, prepares hundreds of medically tailored meals weekly. Volunteers like Genevieve Saucier find fulfillment in assisting others. Lori Gaskell, population health director, emphasized that nutrition is fundamental for veterans' stability, impacting medication adherence, reducing emergency room visits, and preventing homelessness.

The organization extends its services to caregivers and dependents, easing household burdens. Nearly 400 veterans benefit from the program, where the interaction with delivery personnel is often as valuable as the meals themselves.
