- Seven fatalities and 84 hospitalizations were recorded.
- Cooling towers were identified as the likely source.

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in New York City has concluded, the New York City Department of Health announced. This outbreak tragically led to seven deaths and resulted in 84 individuals being hospitalized.
Health officials believe the cases are linked to bacteria found in building cooling towers. After testing more than 180 cooling towers, bacteria were detected in those of 83 buildings. Owners were mandated to drain, clean, and disinfect these towers, a directive that all complied with.
Legionnaires' disease is a non-contagious respiratory illness caused by Legionella bacteria. While most exposures do not cause illness, vulnerable individuals, including those over 50, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions, are at higher risk. Early antibiotic treatment is effective in managing the disease.
