Nurse Struck Off for Patient Harm and Violence Plot
14 Oct
Summary
- Nurse Kay Mitchell's fitness to practice was deemed impaired.
- She caused physical and emotional harm to a patient.
- She encouraged staff to incite violence against a colleague.
A mental health nurse has been removed from the professional register after a misconduct hearing determined her actions caused significant harm to a patient. The Nursing and Midwifery Council found Kay Mitchell's fitness to practice to be impaired following two separate incidents in 2022.
The panel found that Mitchell acted unprofessionally and abusively towards a patient, referred to as Patient A, on or around April 6, 2022. This conduct resulted in the patient experiencing both physical and emotional distress.
In an earlier incident, around March 28, 2022, Mitchell was found to have encouraged a staff member to contact a former employee with the intent of committing violence against a colleague. This encouraged behavior posed a serious risk to another healthcare professional.
Kay Mitchell, who did not attend the hearings and has not engaged with any rehabilitation or training, has expressed no remorse for her actions. The committee concluded that striking her off the register was necessary to protect the public. This order will become effective on October 27, following the expiration of her current suspension.
