Nurse Gives Kidney to Stranger, Husband Gets Transplant Same Day
12 May
Summary
- Nurse donated a kidney to a stranger due to blood group incompatibility.
- Both she and her husband received transplants on the same day.
- The act was facilitated by the NHS Kidney Sharing Scheme.

In October 2023, nurse Filipinas Nercua made an extraordinary act of generosity by donating her kidney to a stranger. Her husband, Cesar, also required a kidney transplant due to polycystic kidney disease and diabetes.
Although Filipinas' kidney was not compatible with Cesar due to different blood groups, she proceeded with the donation to another patient. This incredible gesture was part of the NHS Kidney Sharing Scheme, enabling both Filipinas and Cesar to receive life-saving transplants on the same day at St. George's Hospital in Tooting, south London.
Following the procedures, both Filipinas and Cesar have fully recovered and are enjoying an improved quality of life. The NHS Kidney Sharing Scheme facilitated this complex exchange, involving multiple centers and ultimately saving three lives through living kidney donation. It highlights the critical need for organ donors, with thousands currently awaiting transplants in the UK.
