A 41-year-old nurse from New York passed away on June 18 while undergoing a cosmetic surgery in Medellín, Colombia. The procedure, performed at the El Tesoro Medical Tower in El Poblado, aimed to remove toxic biopolymers that had been injected into her buttocks. Sandoval, who had no prior medical conditions, arrived in Colombia on June 15 for the surgery, costing approximately $11,046.
During the operation, which lasted just over an hour, Sandoval went into cardiorespiratory arrest. Medical staff attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful. The Antioquia Health Department has initiated an investigation to ascertain if the medical center and the surgeon possessed the necessary requirements to perform such a procedure.
Biopolymers are described as foreign, non-medical-grade substances injected to enhance appearance, and are not approved by the FDA. Authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding the procedure, which Sandoval reportedly sought due to health problems associated with the fillers.
