Novo Nordisk Drug Fails Key Cardiovascular Trial
31 Jul
Summary
- Novo Nordisk's experimental drug ziltivekimab failed a late-stage trial.
- The drug targeted cardiovascular inflammation in patients with disease.
- The trial outcome will not impact the 2026 profit outlook.

Novo Nordisk announced on Friday that its experimental drug, ziltivekimab, did not succeed in a crucial late-stage trial. The trial aimed to assess the drug's efficacy in reducing major cardiovascular events among patients with existing cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and inflammation.
The drug, a monoclonal antibody, was developed to target IL-6 ligand, a protein linked to cardiovascular inflammation. Its failure to demonstrate the desired cardiovascular outcome has led to a significant drop in the company's U.S.-listed shares.
Despite this setback, Novo Nordisk has indicated that the trial results will not alter its adjusted operating profit forecast for 2026. However, the company anticipates a non-cash impairment charge will be recognized in the third quarter of this year.
