Nova Scotia Welcomes Psychiatric Nurses

Nova Scotia has officially opened its doors to registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs), enhancing its mental health and addictions care system. The provincial government has enacted amendments to the Nursing Act regulations, establishing the necessary framework for RPNs to be licensed and practice within the province. These professionals possess specialized education tailored for mental health and addictions settings.

The integration of RPNs is expected to significantly bolster mental healthcare capacity for Nova Scotians. Health Minister Michelle Thompson expressed pride in supporting this initiative, emphasizing the recognition of RPNs' unique skills and commitment to working within their full scope of practice. The Nova Scotia College of Nursing will oversee their regulation.

This development positions Nova Scotia alongside nine other provinces and territories that already regulate RPNs, or are in the process of doing so. With the regulatory amendments now in effect, Nova Scotia Health plans to commence recruitment efforts for these specialized nurses starting in January, anticipating their valuable contribution to healthcare.
