Nottingham Maternity Units: Security Lapses Exposed
14 May
Summary
- Security tags are easily removed, posing abduction risks.
- Staff feel unsupported by senior management.
- Baby abduction drills' completion is questioned.

A partial inspection of Nottingham's maternity services has highlighted persistent security vulnerabilities, including easily removable security tags and insecure doors, posing risks of baby abduction.
These findings come as Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) undergoes the largest inquiry of its kind in NHS history, examining approximately 2,500 cases following numerous baby deaths and injuries.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) noted that while some improvements were made since a May 2025 inspection, they lacked robustness. Staff expressed feeling overwhelmed and unsupported by senior management, with significant delays in receiving help after incidents.
Further concerns were raised regarding the effectiveness of baby abduction drills, with staff unable to recall when the last drill occurred, despite records indicating completion.
