Hospices Face Closure Amid Funding Crisis
30 Sep
Summary
- North Yorkshire hospices face deep funding crisis.
- Significant shortfall exists between operational costs and NHS funding.
- Rising demand exacerbates financial instability for charities.
Hospice services across North Yorkshire are facing potential cuts and closures due to a deepening multimillion-pound funding crisis. Charity leaders have presented a stark warning to the North Yorkshire Council's Scrutiny of Health Committee, indicating that redundancies have already occurred and further job losses are anticipated.
The financial position has become "unsustainable," according to a joint report from hospice executives. This is happening at a time when the demand for end-of-life care is rising, and cost-of-living pressures are limiting charitable donations. The situation jeopardizes essential services provided by hospices, including inpatient care, community support, and bereavement counseling.
Four prominent hospices—Saint Michael's, Herriot, St Leonard's, and St Catherine's—collectively operate 48 specialist inpatient beds. The annual cost for these beds alone is approximately £11.2 million. However, NHS funding only covers about £4 million of this cost, leaving charities to raise the remaining £7.2 million through fundraising efforts, excluding the expenses for their other vital services.
