North India Swelters: Doctor Warns of Heat Stroke Risk
25 May
Summary
- North India faces intense heatwave conditions, leading to increased heat-related illnesses.
- Heat stroke, a serious condition, can cause high body temperature and unconsciousness.
- Elderly, children, and those with pre-existing conditions are at higher risk during heatwaves.

As intense heatwave conditions persist across North India, medical experts are urging the public to take precautions against escalating heat-related illnesses. Dr. Randeep Guleria, a leading pulmonologist, noted a significant increase in temperatures and associated symptoms throughout the region. He identified prickly heat as a common, though usually mild, consequence of extreme heat, manageable with basic care.
However, Dr. Guleria issued a strong warning about heat stroke, a life-threatening condition where the body's temperature regulation fails. This can lead to dangerously high body temperatures, unconsciousness, and seizures. He stressed that vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, face a heightened risk.
To mitigate these risks, Dr. Guleria advised avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, especially strenuous work. He recommended staying well-hydrated with fluids and electrolytes, using protective measures like umbrellas and caps when outdoors, and seeking shaded areas. Prompt cooling and increased fluid intake are advised for those experiencing heat exhaustion or cramps.
