NHS Warns of Second Norovirus Surge
19 Feb
Summary
- Daily hospital cases with norovirus symptoms surpassed 1,000 this week.
- A nearly 9% increase in norovirus cases occurred in the last week.
- Public urged to practice good hand hygiene and stay home when sick.

Figures released today reveal that the average number of hospital patients experiencing diarrhoea, vomiting, or norovirus-like symptoms has surpassed 1,000 daily for the first time this winter. Cases rose to 1,012 this week, an 8.9% increase from 929 reported the prior week. This rise prompts fears of a second surge as the NHS grapples with ongoing winter pressures.
NHS national medical director, Dr. Claire Fuller, emphasized the vital role the public plays in preventing further spread. She urged individuals experiencing symptoms to stay home, rest, and drink fluids. It is crucial to avoid attending schools, workplaces, hospitals, and care homes until a person has been symptom-free for at least two consecutive days. Local pharmacies and the NHS 111 service are available for support and advice.
